MATTHEW RYAN BEGINS U.S. TOUR NOVEMBER 5th
WITH HIS BAND THE RED NEEDLES
SUPPORTING I RECALL STANDING AS THOUGH NOTHING COULD FALL
"I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall is a complex album reflective — and worthy — of complicated times.” Album of the Month, August - Twangville
NASHVILLE, TENN. – On I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall, Matthew Ryan “fleshes out his rootsy sound with subtle electronics and drum programming” for a “new and… improved sound.” – (Metromix.com)
The 13-song album was released digitally in July, with a special double disc set (including 6 outtakes and demos) released to independent record stores via Junketboy in August.
While Ryan’s previous release, 2010’s Dear Lover, felt like a peek into the intimacies of a relationship, I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall looks outward and plays more like a war journal set in present time.
“…he's perfected the art of what could be called the anti-anthem, penning songs that feel powerfully intimate and revealing, as if he's conveying them one-on-one… [ I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall] Ryan has the human impact of war on his mind, and he filters his ruminations through his acutely confessional approach.” – Nashville Scene
I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall is further fleshed-out by a diverse group of contributors and friends. Olly Knights of Turin Brakes sings with Ryan on “I Still Believe In You;” Katie Herzig, Kate York & Betsy Roo offered their beautiful voices to counter Ryan’s gravity throughout; Greg Richling produced and co-wrote “Hey Kid;” famed bass player Patrick O’Hearn gave “Summer In The South” a humid bounce; and Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson of the post-rock duo Hammock, along with Stanton Adcock, helped to Ryan to achieve the otherworldly clubland slur of “The Spinning Room.” Long-time friends Brian Bequette, Billy Mercer, Chris Tench, Molly Thomas, Amanda Shires, and former Strays Don’t Sleep cohort and friend Neilson Hubbard made beautiful contributions with their talents as well.
